System-Defined Overtime Methods

Overtime Method 1

Any hours worked over 40 in a pay week are paid at time and one half.

Tip:  See example of Calculating Overtime for a Semi-Monthly Hourly Employee using OT Method 1.

Overtime Method 2

  • Any hours worked over 8 in one day are paid at time and one half. The hours over the regular 8 hours are NOT included in the sum of the regular 40 hour work week.
  • Example:

Mon- 10 hours are worked - 8 regular, 2 OT

    Tue - 8 hours are worked - 8 regular

    Wed - 9 hours are worked - 8 regular, 1 OT

    Thu - 6 hours are worked - 6 regular

    Fri - 8 hours are worked - 8 regular

    Sat - 8 hours are worked - 2 regular hours, 6 OT

    There are a total of 49 hours worked. 40 hours are paid at the regular rate (8 + 8 + 8 + 6 + 8 + 2) and 9 hours paid at a time and a half rate (2 + 1 + 6).

  • Any hours worked over 12 in one day are paid double time.
  • Any hours worked over 40 in a pay week are paid at time and one half.
  • If an employee works 7 consecutive days, they do not have to meet the weekly rule of 40 hours to be paid overtime. California’s rule is that anyone who has hours worked in all 7 days of the pay week must be paid at time and one half for all hours worked up through 8 hours on the 7th day and double time for all hours worked after 8 on the 7th day.

Example:  Using the example above and adding 8 hours worked for the Sunday after Sat (not before Monday) will result in Sun - 9 hours - 8 OT at time and a half, 1 hour OT at double time.

Overtime Method 3

  • Four 10 hour shifts per week as agreed upon by the employer.
  • Any hours worked over 10 in one day are paid at time and one half.
  • Any hours worked over 12 in one day are paid double time.
  • Any hours worked over 40 in a pay week are paid at time and one half.
  • If an employee works 5 days and has already worked 40 hours, the employee receives time and one half for the first 8 hours of the 5th day and double time for any hours over 8 on the 5th day.
  • Note:  The days do NOT need to be consecutive to qualify.

Overtime Method 4

  • Three 12 hour shifts per week as agreed upon by the employer.
  • Any hours worked over 12 in one day are paid double time.
  • Any hours worked over 40 in a pay week are paid at time and one half.
  • If an employee works 4 consecutive days and has already worked 40 hours, the employee receives time and one half for the first 8 hours of the 4th day and double time for any hours over 8 on the 4th day.

Overtime Method 5

  • Time and one half is paid for all hours worked over 5.5 hours per day or 27.5 hours per pay week.
  • Time and one half is paid for all hours worked on the 6th consecutive day of the pay week and double time for the 7th consecutive day of the pay week.

Overtime Method 6

  • Time and one half is paid for all hours worked over 6 hours per day or 30 hours per pay week.
  • Time and one half is paid for all hours worked on the 6th consecutive day of the pay week and double time for the 7th consecutive day of the pay week.

Overtime Method 7

  • Time and one half is paid for all hours worked over 8 hours per day or 40 hours per pay week.
  • Time and one half is paid for all hours worked on the 6th consecutive day of the pay week and double time for the 7th consecutive day of the pay week.

Overtime Method 8

Any hours worked over 30 in a pay week are paid at time and one half.

Overtime Method 9

No over time hours are figured at all, no matter how many hours are worked.

Note:  If an employee is set up with Overtime Method 9, the system does not warn you if the employee goes over 40 hours when you are scheduling an employee in PS: Schedules.

Overtime Method 10

Time and one half is paid for all hours over 8 per day and 40 hours per pay week.

Overtime Method 11

Double time paid for any hours worked over 40 hours in a pay week.

Overtime Method 13

Any hours worked over 44 hours in a pay week are paid at time and one half.

Overtime Method 14

Any hours worked over 42 hours in a pay week are paid at time and one half.

Overtime Method 15

  • Any hours worked over 8 in one day are paid at time and one half.
  • Any hours worked over 12 in one day are paid double time.
  • Any hours worked over 40 in a pay week are paid at time and one half.

  • If an employee works 7 consecutive days the employee receives double time for all hours worked on the 7th day.

Overtime Method 16 (USE FOR NEVADA)

  • Any hours worked over 8 in a rolling 24 hour period are paid as overtime.
  • Any hours worked over 40 in a pay week are paid at time and one half.
  • The rolling 24 hour period has a limited look back of one pay period. The rolling 24 hour period starts on the first check-in of a new pay period.
  • Overtime is calculated if an employee has a timekeeping record with no In Time or Out Time.

Overtime Method 17 (USE FOR COLORADO)

  • Daily hours worked over 12 in a day are paid at time and one half
  • If there are consecutive hours worked over 12, these are paid at time and one half unless already paid due to the Daily Hours Rule
  • Any non-overtime hours worked over 40 in a pay week are paid at time and one half

Overtime Method 18

If the hours worked on the first 6 consecutive days of the same workweek are under 40, and the hours worked on the 7th consecutive day of the same workweek puts the total over 40, then all hours on the 7th day are overtime.

Note:  If a shift crosses two work weeks, the hours are divided between the employer defined work week.
