GL : Cash Flow Statement

Overview

The Cash Flow Statement classifies cash receipts and payments according to whether they stem from operating, investing, or financing activities for a specific period. This will enable you to get a historical look at your cash flow by looking at your sources and uses of cash. This is not meant to be a forecast of cash requirements, but rather a historical presentation, similar to an income statement for a period of time.

To set up your Cash Flow Report format, see GL: Cash Flow Report Formats.

The information provided in a statement of cash flows should help to

  • assess the enterprise's ability to generate positive future net cash flows;
  • assess the enterprise's ability to meet its obligations, its ability to pay dividends, and its needs for external financing;
  • assess the reasons for differences between net income and associated cash receipts and payments; and
  • assess the effects on an enterprise's financial position of both its cash and non-cash investing and financing transactions during the period
